DC is undoubtedly an expensive place to live. Why do it?
Free things! The Smithsonian Museums, and the Zoo (complete with DC’s pride and joy, the panda Bao Bao) are free. Get your animal and history fix without breaking the bank. With frequent festivals on the mall, art shows, farmer’s markets, and musical performances throughout the city, every weekend in DC is full of opportunities to save money while having the type of fun only offered in the nation’s capital.
Transportation. Many consider DC traffic to be one of its pitfalls. But, DC’s public transportation is impressive. With the metro, circulator, metrobus, capital bikeshare, and zipcars, to name a few, DC is well equipped with ways for you to explore the city. DC has also become a hotbed for startup companies looking to provide new transportation options. If you do find yourself stuck on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, you have an awesome view of the monuments. Cities have traffic, but DC is the best place to put up with the nuisance –nuisances seem to dissipate quickly with a view of Lincoln in marble.
The weather. DC definitely has 4 seasons. While summer can be hot and humid, residents take advantage of cooler nights and the outdoors promoting a fun and relaxed ambience. Fall cools down, but the period between the end of summer and full-fledged fall is lovely. Winters can be long, but as far as east coast winters are concerned, DC is relatively mild. While a winter coat is a must, you can leave your snowshoes at home. Spring is really prime time in DC. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is one of spring’s most anticipated events. The cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin are gorgeous and the entire community heads outdoors to see them for a few weeks. The atmosphere is really fun, and if you like people watching, this the event for you. Spring sees the Potomac busy with kayakers, the Waterfront teeming with bikers and runners, and the monuments become an even bigger attraction for tourists and locals alike.
The President lives here. Politics don’t have to be your forte to live in the district, but you must admit, it is exciting to live amidst all the political action.
Food. DC has exquisite restaurants and is home to diverse cuisine. Any kind of food you can imagine can be found in the district. Food is just one way that DC’s diversity manifests itself. The culture this city offers is unbeatable.
Travel. Not only are people constantly visiting the district, but it is really easy to get away. Its proximity to big cities, like New York, makes DC’s central location a real plus. While tourist inundation can be a bit of pain if you are rushing to get to work, they contribute to the city’s appeal as a site of cultural diversity.
History. DC is rich with history. Monuments, museums, and memorials abound. It’s history and time-honored traditions are blended with modern amenities that make city life comfortable and convenient.
